Moving Forward

Together, as we enter Covid-19 Phase IV for Illinois, we are taking steps towards what will likely be a new normal for quite a while. It is time to imagine what is next, what we value and where we need to pivot. During the previous phases while we isolated or “quaranteamed,” we have become acutely aware of our surroundings and the impact it’s had on our sense of well-being – physically, psychologically and emotionally.

As architects, our holistic, problem-solving, design-thinking skills continue to assist clients to thrive through this time of COVID-19 in very unique ways. Health and wellness have always been primary considerations, but now are being applied alongside new and emerging practicalities.

“Resimercial” Design

It has been a hot topic in the last 3 – 4 years, and refers to the practice of incorporating aspects of home into workplace design. The rationale for this is that brain studies prove a more relaxed atmosphere in the workplace truly enhances creative thinking. With the recent WFH (Work From Home) phenomenon blurring boundaries, we can embrace the qualities that have proven beneficial to enhance any area of concentration, whether work or homeschool related. In his recent book, “My Creative Space: How to Design Your Home to Stimulate Ideas and Spark Innovation,” Donald Rattner discusses how our environments can be engineered for inspiration and innovation.

Change Your Position to Promote Creativity

One idea is to include an area for Recumbent Posture. Rattner suggests that individuals who lie down or recline exhibit greater problem-solving aptitude compared to those in an upright position. A window seat or bench might be the perfect spot for your next big idea!

Re-Invent Spaces to Spark Joy

While the creative juices are flowing, carve out underutilized space for new hobbies and interests. An extra guest room might not be used so much right now for guests, but it could be a wonderful place to set up an art or photo studio, music lounge or writing desk.

Transform Outdoor Spaces to Allow for Safe Socialization

Alter your yard or patio to permit safe socially distant visits, particularly in areas that may have been ignored or neglected before. A shady spot in the backyard where the grass just doesn’t grow could be transformed into an outdoor living room immersed in shade loving plants. A great resource to consult is the Chicago Botanic Garden for help on garden details and for optimal plant suggestions.

Assessing the suitability of our current surroundings taps into resourcefulness that nurtures us through these transformative times. If the place where you live (and likely now work also) feels inadequate, then let us know how we might be able to assist you.  The benefits of good design and the ability to shape our own supportive environments have never been more important.
